Hot Stone Massage, as the name suggests, is performed with stones that have been heated.
You may well have seen the typical photo of a girl lying face down with several stones placed along their spine. This type of image is actually very misleading.
Typically Hot Stone Massage involves the therapists using oils to massage your body with gliding strokes whilst holding a hot stone in each hand. Very rarely are stones placed in specific spots on the body and then left.
The stones used are usually Basalt which is Volcanic Rock. This type of rock typically has a high iron-ore content which helps the stones retain heat for longer.
Special heaters are used to warm the stones to the required working temperature. This is achieved by submerging the stones in water and then heating the water, this gives the stones an even and consistent temperature throughout the treatment.
Hot Stone massage may last between 60 and 90 minutes and is an extremely relaxing treatment.
Heat helps the soft tissues of the body to relax, which in turn will help you feel tension melting away.
Heat also has a calming and soothing affect on the nervous system, helping us to chillout and reducing anxiety and stress.
A Hot Stone Massage with an accomplished and talented Hot Stone therapist is one of the most relaxing treatments available.
Tell your therapist if the stones are too hot for you.
As with any massage you should be happy and comfortable throughout your treatment, if you’re not you are unlikely to be getting as much benefit as you could be.
Your therapist should wash and clean the stones between each treatment and the water should also be changed between each client.
